Clear Out Expired Products to Make Way For New Ones!

Schwarzkopf ProductsMost of us are guilty of holding onto a stash of half used hair and beauty products, but did you know that they have expiry dates?!

It’s important to check the expiry dates on the side of your hair care bottles, and ditch those which are out of date. Out of date products won’t perform as well as they used to, some will become lumpy and can even cause irritation. Hair sprays and other spray products are less likely to deteriorate and become contaminated, but it’s important to keep an eye on all cream or liquid based products in tubs and bottles.

If you have anything unwanted that’s unopened, a local charity may be glad to receive it.

Now you’ve got space, it’s a great opportunity to restock with fresh supplies of your hair care products, or discover new favourites. Pop into our Clacton hair salon where our experts will be happy to advise on the best products for your hair type and styling needs.

Give Your Brushes The Clean of Their Life!

We all know that dirty make-up brushes can harbour germs and cause breakouts, but we often forget that our hairbrushes are also a haven for bacteria! Clumps of hair, dead skin cells, styling products and oil can all build up in the bristles of your brushes, creating the ideal environment for bacteria to thrive. With dirty hairbrushes, you'll also be blow drying grease and dirt back into your freshly washed hair, so it’s important to get into the habit of cleaning your brushes regularly.

Remove built-up hair every week and use a deep-cleansing shampoo regularly to get your brushes nice and clean. If you use a wooden or paddle brush, check your manufacturers guidelines before washing, as water can get trapped inside the brush and may result in the wooden finish getting spoilt. A quick swish of hot water should be sufficient to keep it clean.

Don't Neglect Your Styling Tools

Spring Clean Styling Tools DryerIf you use electrical styling tools on a regular basis, they can suffer from the same build up of dirt, products, grease and bacteria as your hairbrushes. Heated tools such as curlers, straighteners and wands should be cleaned regularly, to ensure they work to their full potential (and don't cause problems to your hair!)

To clean your styling tools, first make sure they are unplugged and never submerge them in water. Using a damp soft cloth or wipe, gently clean the styling plates or, if they're really grimy, you could try using some rubbing alcohol. Never use a scouring pad on them as this can cause damage and always make sure your tools are completely dry before using them.

Another often over-looked area of dust and dirt build up is your hairdryer filter, which is usually on the back of the dryer. This build up can affect how well your dryer operates in the long run, so it’s well worth keeping it clean. You should be able to twist off the filter on the back, or on some models, unclip it. Simply wipe with a warm, damp (not wet) cloth or hand towel to remove dust, lint and other build up, then dry.

Sleep on Silk

No matter how soundly you sleep, you will spend hours each night with your hair and face scrunched into your pillow. The friction against cotton pillowcases can cause a tousled bed head the next morning that can feel fragile, look frizzy and be difficult to style. To prevent this, we’d recommend investing in a silk pillowcase if you can, or silk cases with cotton underneath for a more affordable option.  Dermatologists say that sleeping on a silky pillowcase can even make your skin less prone to wrinkles too, so it’s definitely worth a try!

If you want to keep your cotton pillowcase, simply make sure you wash and change them very regularly to avoid transferring grease and bacteria build up onto your hair and skin.

Use Seasonally Appropriate Products

Spring Clean Hair CareWe all know that we need to adapt our skin care routine for the changing seasons, such as adding SPF or a heavier moisturiser, but did you know that the same goes for your hair?

As the weather brightens up during the spring and summer months, your hair colour may fade in the sun, so you’ll need to protect it from the UV rays with a dedicated colour shampoo & conditioning team and an SPF spray. For better sun protection, you should consider covering your hair to preserve your hair colour.

You may find that your scalp and hair get greasier in hot, humid weather so you’ll need to adjust your shampoo and choose a nourishing conditioner to keep hair hydrated.

If you aren’t sure which products are right for  you, speak to your Hoop Hair stylist. We’ll be happy to recommend the right ones from our wide range of hair care products.
